CHAPTER ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE PRESIDENT

1)   College Fairs - DC Chapter Vice President, Gwen Douglas ( ismilnlaf2@yahoo.com- 410-981-6009 w) is the chair of the Recruiting Committee. She has organized the committed and they are prepared to participate in 2 main fairs. I have listed upcoming fairs and we are committed to b and c listed below. (a) Eleanor Roosevelt HS, Greenbelt, MD. October 13th 7-9pm...contact Nicole Yates @ (301)513-5305. This school has about 900 students enrolled in the Science Tech program and 70-90% of the students go on to college. (b) Congressman Albert Wynn's College Fair...Northwestern HS in Adelphi, MD October 16th 11am-3pm. This fair is heavily attended because it is advertised on the radio that the students listen to and there is usually a FINANCIAL AID workshop as well.  (c) National Council of Negro Women(Mitchellville/Bowie Chapter) 1st Annual College Expo, October 23rd, 1-6pm at Eleanor Roosevelt. Door prizes, scholarships, food, free step show, financial aid & PSAT/SAT workshop will all be offered. For more information visit www.ncnw-mb.org/events.htm

2)  Career Day at Martin L. King Middle School Oct. 22, 9:30 to 12:00 noon. A request is being made for African American males to participate. Terry Mathers is the Career Coordinator/Guidance Counselor (301-572-0650). This falls on a weekday. If anyone is interested, please let me know.

3)  GSU High School Day, October 16, 2004, sponsored by the Office of Admissions and Recruitment. This will be held during the GSU vs. UAPB game. I have a flyer and registration form.

4)  Virtual High Ability Program at GSU. Scymentress Williams, Marketing/GSU Distance Learning area (scwilliams@gram.edu) would like for the DC Chapter to host an informational meeting of students, parents and counselors at some point next semester. We need to encourage high school students to participate in the high ability program. This way, they will get a taste of college life. She will travel to DC. We will need volunteers to assist the Recruiting Committee with this effort.

5)  GSU Soccer Team. It is my understanding, we have 3 players on the team from the DC area. The team will participate in the Second Annual Howard University Women's Soccer Invitational Tournament. The Lady Tigers will play this Friday first at 6:00 pm and then Oct 3rd at 11:00 am against Delaware State. Both games will be played at Greene Stadium on Howard University's campus. Come out and support GSU. If you plan to attend, look for and/or contact our own, Shellie "D.C. Shel" Bowers, at 202-362-3259, 202-282-3303, or 202-528-9996. Matthew Okoh is the Head Women's Soccer Coach (okoh@gram.edu). Please join me on wishing them the best this season.

6)  Book Signing by Cleo Scott Brown (gramblinite). Cleo Brown will be in DC and she will have a book signing on Thursday, October 28th, 6:30 - 8:30 pm at 450 Massachusetts Ave., WDC. The book, Witness the Truth, tells the life story of a grassroots human rights leader and his campaign to win the right to vote for african americans of Lake Providence from reconstruction until the 1960s. If you are in town, feel free to stop by.

7)  Homecoming, Nov 6, 2004. I have received request for hotel rooms. I hear they are booked but here are a list of numbers for you to call. Holiday Inn Express 318-513-9777; Hampton Inn 318-251-3090; Comfort Inn 318-242-0070: Ramada Inn 318-255-5901; Days Inn 318-251-2360 Also, I received a flyer for an alumni party hosted by Sweet Lou Collins to be held at the McLane Recreation Center from 7:00 pm until on Saturday night. There will be a 20 year Delta iota Anniversary Reunion Celebration on Nov. 5th. Contact Marja Pradia-Williams at 214-405-5605 or pwdelta@hotmail.com. This event is in joint collaboration with the 1984 lines of the Omegas, Kappas, Deltas and AKAs As I receive any other info, I will pass it on.

8)  Bayou Classic. The Hilton Riverside is the host hotel. The envelopes have been mailed to make reservations. The deadline for making reservations is Nov 5th. www.statefarmbayouclassic.com for details on activites. The GUNAA will be sponsoring a pre-game alumni breakfast/meeting at 9:30 in the Versailles Ballroom of the Hilton. The tickets are $20.00. Please try to purchase your tickets early. There will also be a scholarship concert on Nov 27 at 9:00 pm in the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton. The Temptations Review and N.O. 4 Finest will be performing. The tickets are $35 each and $350 for a table.

9)  President's Achievement Fund (100k Fund). I, as well as Autry Alexis in Atlanta, have contacted or spoken to quite a few alumni on giving to the President's Achievement Fund (scholarship). Even though the deadline is Oct 8th, we still want your support. The concept of the 100 days is that ALUMNI CAN AND WILL GIVE BACK TO GSU. We are doing this in conjunction with Dr. Horace Judson's first 100 days at GSU and we want to show non gramblinites that we know how to support our alma mater. For those who have given, thank you. 10)  Grambling Lights. When you go to GSU, you will now notice that we now have lights on I-20 at the exits. You can now see at night. SMILE!! There was a ceremony in honor of the late Pinkie Wilkerson this past Saturday in Grambling. My boss, U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu, assisted in making this dream a reality, along with Mayor Martha Andrus and others.

11)  GSU Enrollment. The enrollment is up. We have 5,040 this semester. Congratulations, GSU!!!!!
